Former Coinbase Manager Asks Court For Leniency In Crypto Insider Trading Case!

Ishan Wahi, the former Coinbase product manager who pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud in February in a crypto insider trading case, has requested a reduced sentence of just 10 months in prison instead of the guideline sentence of 37 to 46 months. Wahi and his lawyers have asked the court to consider his background and circumstances at the upcoming sentencing hearing scheduled for May 2022.

U.S. Regulator In Conversation With Binance Over Enforcement Actions!

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) filed a civil enforcement action against Changpeng Zhao and Binance Holdings Limited, Binance Holdings (IE) Limited, and Binance (Services) Holdings Limited (together, Binance) with numerous violations of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC regulations. The complaint also charges Samuel Lim, Binance’s former chief compliance officer, with aiding and abetting Binance’s violations.

The Next Class Action Against Delisted Crypto Company Eqonex!

Nasdaq-delisted crypto company Eqonex is the subject of several Class Action lawsuits. Most recently, we reported on Rosen Law's class action against the firm, its partner Binance, and its founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao. Another U.S. law firm, Schall Law, a shareholder rights litigation firm, invited Eqonex investors to join a class action lawsuit against Eqonex over alleged violations of the U.S. Securities Exchange Act.

Class Action Lawsuit Against Delisted Crypto Company Eqonex, Binance Group, And Changpeng Zhao!

In February 2022, Eqonex had reportedly become the first crypto company to receive a listing on NASDAQ via a SPAC construction. Eqonex filed for judicial administration with the High Court of Singapore to restructure its debt. In February 2023, the company received a notice from Nasdaq that the company's shares would be delisted on March 1, 2023. On 22 April 2023, the U.S. law firm Rosen Law announced a class action lawsuit against the former Binance affiliate.

European Parliament Approves New Crypto Legislation MiCA Under ESMA Supervision!

The EU will become the frontrunner in crypto regulation. In a vote Thursday, the EU Parliament voted 517 in favor and 38 against passing the Markets in Crypto Act (MiCA). The legislation seeks to reduce risks for consumers buying crypto assets, which will mean providers can become liable if they lose investors’ assets. The rules will impose a number of requirements on crypto platforms, token issuers, and traders.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) continued its crusade against crypto and charged crypto exchange operator Bittrex, Inc., a Delaware-registered company, and its co-founder and former CEO William Shihara for operating an unregistered national securities exchange, broker, and clearing agency. The SEC also charged Bittrex’s subsidiary, Bittrex Global GmbH, a company registered in Liechtenstein.

CySEC Extends Suspension of FTX Europe! The Defunct Crypto Exchange May Be Restarted!

FTX, the crypto exchange founded by Sam-Bankman Fried (SBF) and his friends, collapsed with a lot of noise last year and filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. Apparently, many billions disappeared. Most recently, we reported that CySEC-regulated FTX Europe had resumed customer payouts to its European clients. CySEC recently extended the suspension of FTX Europe until September 30, 2023. The main website FTX.com is no longer operational, but this could change.

Another Warning Against Token Asset Trading Platform Genius Assets!

The Spanish CNMV issued a warning against Genius Assets in May 2022. At that time, the crypto trading scheme was still operated through a legal entity in Estonia which has since been deleted. The operator of this digital asset marketplace is now Genius Assets LLC. Jurisdiction is not indicated on the website. It is likely to be a Romanian project operated through Dubai. At least the CEO Claudiu Buda is based there. We have added the project to our Red Compliance list.

Australian Regulator ASIC Canceled Binance’s Derivative Licences On The Exchanges Request!

The Australian regulator ASIC has canceled the Australian financial services license held by Oztures Trading Pty Ltd c/n/a as Binance Australia Derivatives (Binance). The move comes following a request from Binance on April 5. ASIC has been conducting a targeted review of Binance's financial services business in Australia, including its classification of retail and wholesale clients. However, the targeted review will continue, says ASIC in its press release.
