On 20 October 2022, the Italian regulator Consob announced that it ordered the black-out of six illegally operating online trading websites related to five broker scams. The total number of black-out orders increase to 780. Consob has been authorized by the so-called “Growth Decree” to order Internet connectivity service providers to inhibit access from Italy to the websites through which financial services are offered without due authorization. On Feb 2022, the Italian Consob issued orders to blackout three websites illegally offering financial services. This brings the total number of websites blacked out since July 2019 to 634. Regulators in other regimes can only issue warnings against illegal providers. Consob can order Internet providers to block their websites for the Italian market. It would be desirable if other regulators were authorized by their legislators to issue such blackouts. This would be an important step in the fight against cybercrime and scams.
