Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has long been a controversial figure. Born in Russia in 1984, Durov first rose to prominence as the founder of VKontakte (VK), Russia's largest social network. However, his refusal to comply with Kremlin demands to shut down opposition accounts on VK led to his departure from Russia in 2014. He sold his stake in VKontakte and subsequently launched Telegram.
