Binance Nigeria Case: The Fugitive Executive Located in Kenya to be Extradited to Nigeria.

Spread financial intelligence

Nigeria’s government and law enforcement continue to aggressively go against Binance and its executives. The Nigerian government has located Nadeem Anjarwalla, a key Binance executive who had previously fled from Nigerian custody, in Kenya. The Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), alongside international law enforcement agencies including INTERPOL and the Kenyan Police Service, is now working to expedite Anjarwalla’s extradition back to Nigeria.

Nadeem Anjarwalla escaped from Nigerian authorities on March 22, 2024, and has been at large since then. His capture and the ensuing extradition efforts highlight the extensive collaboration between multiple countries’ law enforcement, including the US, UK, Northern Ireland, and Kenya. This international effort underscores the serious nature of the charges Anjarwalla faces, which include tax evasion, currency speculation, and money laundering as part of his role at Binance.

The case against Binance and its executives, including Anjarwalla and Tigran Gambaryan, has been a focal point in Nigeria’s broader crackdown on currency manipulation and illicit financial flows. The Central Bank of Nigeria has pointed out substantial sums, reportedly over $26 billion, that have been funneled through Binance with unclear oversight or tracking, affecting the country’s foreign exchange market significantly.

This situation also marks a shift in the handling of the case, with the EFCC now fully taking over the proceedings from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). This move could signal a more focused and possibly expedited process as the government continues its stringent measures against financial crimes related to cryptocurrency operations.

As the legal processes unfold, the international crypto and finance community will be closely watching the implications of this case on global crypto regulation and the operations of major exchanges like Binance.
