The Israeli Mining magnate Beny Steinmetz was arrested Sunday at Athens International Airport on the basis of a European Arrest Warrant issued by Romania, despite a Greek court rejecting his extradition two years ago. However, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that it was unlawful for courts to reject a European Arrest Warrant. He was released on bail and is prohibited from leaving the country.
FinTelegram and other media outlets reported last week that Israeli entrepreneur Beny Steinmetz was arrested in Cyprus on a conviction and arrest warrant in Romania. According to the court verdict, he was allegedly involved with Tal Silberstein and other partners in Romania's large-scale fraud and corruption scheme. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Steinmetz has now been released on bail in Cyprus.
Last Thursday, Beny Steinmetz, an Israeli entrepreneur, was detained in Larnaca, Cyprus, following an EU arrest warrant initiated by Romania. Steinmetz received a five-year jail sentence in Romania in Dec 2020 for his involvement in a vast real estate fraud, one of Romania's biggest-ever corruption cases. Additionally, Steinmetz faced an 18-month prison sentence in Switzerland for bribing Guinea's ex-president.
