Fintech Wise‘s co-founder, Kristo Kaarmann, has become prominent in London’s public markets. New data highlights that Kaarmann’s stake in the foreign exchange payments company soared in value to an impressive £1.65 billion in 2023, marking a £600 million increase since the beginning of the year. This growth translates to an average daily gain exceeding £1.6 million. Not so bad for, really!
Kristo Kaarmann may be under FCA investigation, but the Wise founder has put on £600m and topped the London list. Kaarmann, holding an 18% share in Wise, has seen his investment flourish as the company is now valued at approximately £9 billion. This financial success can be partially attributed to the favorable impact of higher interest rates, which contributed to Wise’s 280% profit spike in its latest fiscal year. In 2023, the company’s stock notably returned 58%.
However, despite these financial triumphs, Kaarmann faces scrutiny from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) due to personal tax issues, resulting in a substantial six-figure fine. His tax troubles were further highlighted when HM Revenue and Customs listed him among “deliberate tax defaulters” for a late tax return in the 2017-18, incurring a £366,000 penalty.
Born in Estonia, Kaarmann founded Wise 12 years ago to reduce exorbitant fees associated with international money transfers. In response to his tax issues, his spokesperson has stated that Kaarmann is now dedicating more attention to his personal administrative affairs.
