Wanted: U.S. Offers $10 Million Reward For Russian Ransomware Cybercriminal Mikhail Matveev!

On May 16, 2023, Mikhail Matveev, a Russian national, was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) for creating and spreading multiple ransomware strains with estimated losses of up to $200 million for the victims. At the same time, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has indicted Matveev on various charges. The U.S. State Department is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

Sébastien Vachon-Desjardins, 35, a former IT specialist for Public Services and Procurement Canada, has been sentenced to a 20-year prison term in the U.S. for his ransomware hacking activities. The federal court judge called it "the worst case he's ever seen." Vachon-Desjardins was one of the most prolific affiliates of NetWalker, a Russian-speaking ransomware criminal gang that operated at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
