On August 17, 2023 we brought a report about the yacht of the richest Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko, giving a brief description of the oligarch and his activities. We then received an email purporting to be from the oligarch’s media tem. In it we were informed that the yacht would not belong to the oligarch, but to a trust. We bring the email below in the original (see screenshot above). We could not check the authenticity of the sender.

With all respect to your latest article “The Richest Russian Oligarch Andrei Melnichenko And His Seized $600-Million Super-Yacht in Triest!” published on Aug 17, 2023, I would like please to bring to your attention incorrect facts. I write this suggestion with the utmost respect for your publication’s reputation for accuracy and integrity: –

  • It is incorrect to say: “the Italian state seized the super-yacht SY A, owned by Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko.” Andrey Melnichenko doesn’t own Yacht A; it belongs to a discretionary trust to which Mr. Melnichenko has no relations. This information is public – please, see our comment to Forbes and  Trieste all news couple of months ago.
  • It is incorrect to say: “Melnichenko’s business interests span various sectors, including coal, fertilizers, and energy.” Andrey Melnichenko doesn’t own the shares of EuroChem and SUEK, the companies are owned by a discretionary trust, which Mr. Melnichenko has no relation to. He stepped down from his positions in the Boards of Directors of EuroChem and SUEK, and as the main beneficiary of the trust on 8 March 2022. He does not have any ownership rights and does not exercise any control over the companies he has founded.
  • It is incorrect to say: “Despite the challenges posed by Western sanctions, he continues to be a dominant force in various industries.” Melnichenko does not have any economic influence in the industries sector. He held no executive positions since he left MDM Bank Board of Directors in 2005 and he has no relations to the operational activities of the companies (EuroChem and SUEK) he has founded.
