Judging by the reports coming in daily through our whistleblower system, the worst scams at the moment are the so-called fund recovery schemes in the crypto and blockchain space. Consumers are contacted and told that a considerable crypto asset has been discovered on a wallet. For example, the fund recovery scam calling itself Blockchair is currently doing this. It charges so-called maintenance fees for the payout. The story goes as follows.
Modus Operandi
Customers are contacted by the Blockchair people. They are told that Bitcoins have been discovered on a wallet that would belong to them. They could pay out this crypto asset. However, a maintenance fee would have to be paid in advance. This would be needed to operate the Blockchair infrastructure securely.
In one case presented to us, the potential victim was told that they had found 4.2 Bitcoins (BTC) in a wallet worth more than $117,000. However, €17,500 in maintenance fees would have to be paid in advance. This would be non-negotiable. We warn consumers not to fall for fund recovery scams like Blockchair. It’s just a rip-off. Stay far away, protect your financial health and your data.
