Revealed: Binance Founder Was Denied Travel Before Sentencing Despite High Bail!

Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder and former CEO of Binance, faced a setback when a federal judge denied his request to travel to the United Arab Emirates for a personal emergency. This decision came despite CZ‘s offer to secure his return to the U.S. with his Binance equity, valued at an impressive $4.5 billion, as a guarantee for his return. This valuation was based on the last fundraising round of Binance, conducted two years ago.

The details of this proposal were outlined in a letter to Judge Richard Jones, dated December 22nd, as revealed in recent court filings.

The Binance founder’s request was related to the hospitalization and surgery of a close associate, whose identity remains confidential as per court documents. CZ‘s legal team had submitted a formal request for this travel, scheduled for January 4th, with an expected duration of one to four weeks. This period was intended to cover the time needed for the medical procedure and the subsequent recovery phase.

However, Judge Jones, after a closed hearing on December 29th, declined CZ’s request. Earlier in December, Zhao had faced a similar rejection for a separate travel request to the UAE. The judge cited CZ‘s considerable wealth and lack of strong ties to the U.S. as reasons for considering him a substantial flight risk.

CZ’s legal troubles in the US began with his guilty plea in November in a Seattle federal court for failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program at Binance, the world’s largest crypto exchange. Following his plea, CZ stepped down as CEO of Binance. He currently awaits sentencing on February 23rd but remains free on a $175 million release bond.

The judge’s decision underscores the legal complexities Zhao faces, balancing personal exigencies with the obligations and constraints of his ongoing legal proceedings. This situation highlights the intersection of personal lives and the regulatory challenges faced by prominent figures in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency industry.
